The first two tiers taught you to "read the market"; this tier teaches you to "read yourself" and "read regularities" along two tracks:

  • Trading psychology track: the market is a collection of humans, and human decisions have systematic biases — Livermore's lifelong bankruptcies teach the price of discipline, Mark Douglas teaches probabilistic thinking, Kahneman provides the behavioral finance foundation, Taleb shows the future is inherently uncertain.
  • Quantitative track: turning trading from "intuition" into "verifiable rules" — from a quant's life story to dissecting the quant black box, up to machine learning and volatility trading.

【Core Ideas】

  • Background & author: nominally by Edwin Lefèvre, published 1923, modeled on legendary speculator Jesse Livermore's life. Livermore, known as the "Great Bear of Wall Street," rose and crashed repeatedly and died by suicide in 1940. For 100 years this has been the No. 1 book on traders' lists — because human nature hasn't changed in a century.
  • Trend following: "It never was my thinking that made the big money — it was always my sitting." Trend profits come from holding, not churn; Livermore stressed "never short in a bull market, never long in a bear market."
  • Market psychology: nearly every classic passage is about crowd emotion — tops are where sentiment is hottest, bottoms where despair runs deepest; he judged trend health by observing "whether the market reacted as expected."
  • Discipline and ruin: Livermore went broke repeatedly by breaking his own rules (oversized positions, revenge trades, fighting the trend) and recovered through discipline — the most valuable thing in the book isn't his winning method but his path to ruin.

  • Author: Mark Douglas, trading psychology coach; among the most cited works in trading psychology.
  • The market is a probability game: any single trade's P&L is random; long-term results are determined by "positive expectancy + consistent execution" — what you need isn't being right every trade but staying consistently right across enough trades.
  • Eliminating the need to be right: the trader's biggest psychological barrier is "I must be right," which leads to moving stops, refusing to cut losses, and averaging down — every system-destroying behavior stems from refusing to accept a single loss.
  • An operational path to probabilistic thinking: accept uncertainty → admit single outcomes are unpredictable → shift attention from results to process → exchange consistent execution for long-term positive expectancy.
  • Rules and flow: rules free attention — the system makes decisions, the human executes; consistency of execution is the only edge a trader truly owns.

③ Thinking, Fast and Slow(思考,快与慢)

【Core Ideas】

  • Author: Daniel Kahneman, Nobel laureate in economics and a founder of behavioral economics; this 2011 book distills a lifetime of research.
  • System 1 / System 2: fast thinking (System 1) is intuitive, automatic, effortless but error-prone; slow thinking (System 2) is rational, effortful, reliable yet lazy — most trading errors come from System 1 jumping the gun.
  • Representativeness bias: mistaking randomness for pattern (three green candles = trend!), the law of small numbers, hindsight ("it was obvious afterward" — exactly technical analysis's hindsight trap).
  • Loss aversion: the pain of losing is roughly 2–2.5x the pleasure of an equivalent gain — the physiological root of "unable to hold winners, unable to cut losers."
  • Anchoring: the first price (cost basis, prior high) anchors subsequent judgment — "I'll sell when I'm back to breakeven" comes straight from this.

④ The Black Swan / Antifragile(黑天鹅 / 反脆弱)

【Core Ideas】

  • Author: Nassim Nicholas Taleb, former trader and risk researcher; The Black Swan (2007) and Antifragile (2012) anchor his "Incerto" trilogy.
  • The Black Swan: a black swan = an unpredictable, massively impactful event explainable only in retrospect (financial crises, pandemics, the Luna collapse). Humanity's problem is modeling a black-swan world with white-swan data — over-relying on normal distributions and historical data while forgetting that tail risk decides survival.
  • "We don't know what we don't know": most models handle uncertainty by ignoring it; the right posture is admitting the unknowable and reserving buffer for extremes.

⑤ My Life as a Quant / Inside the Black Box(宽客人生 / 打开量化投资的黑箱)

  • My Life as a Quant(《宽客人生》)by Emanuel Derman, former head of quantitative strategies at Goldman Sachs who worked alongside Fischer Black (of Black-Scholes). An autobiography of physicist-turned-quant — the best book for understanding "how quants think."
    • Quant isn't "using math to predict markets" — Derman stresses models are approximation and art, not truth; models say "if the world is like this, prices should be like that," and reality is always messier.

  • Psychology track: Reminiscences reads like a thriller, but it's a cautionary tale written at the cost of a life; don't let the narrative "Livermore always made it back after bankruptcy" lower your estimate of liquidation's price — he died by suicide in the end. No book is worth verifying "probabilistic thinking" with your own money.
  • Quant track: the prettier the backtest curve, the likelier it's an overfit artifact (see 15-Quant Practice/03-Your First Backtest↗). Taking "historically optimal parameters" straight to live trading is the most common route to blowup for quant beginners.
  • Options track: option selling and volatility arbitrage are institutional battlegrounds; retail participants usually sit on the sell side where tail losses can exceed principal (naked American-style calls/puts).
