Chapter Intro

09-Markets & Instruments / 01-The Forex Market↗ covered the "concepts" of forex: market size, quoting conventions, pip value calculation, trading hours, and leverage. This chapter goes deeper with hands-on practice — the concepts chapter answers "what is this market"; this chapter answers "how do you survive in it".

Forex is the world's most liquid margin market: trillions of dollars in daily turnover, 24-hour continuous trading, extremely tight spreads, and free entry and exit. But it is also one of the markets with the highest retail blow-up rates: high leverage + 24-hour volatility + rampant shady brokers mean most people lose money here faster than in any other market. This chapter sells no "get-rich-quick myths" — only practical methods, how the mechanics really work, and the risk red lines.

⚠️ Risk Warning

Everything in this chapter is for learning and research only and does not constitute investment advice. Exchange rates, interest rates, leverage, and regulatory figures cited are teaching references — always defer to the latest market data, regulations, and broker terms. Leveraged forex trading carries extreme risk and can wipe out your entire capital or even produce a negative balance.

Chapter Summaries

01 · Forex Trading Practice

First, get to know the "personalities" of seven major pairs: EUR/USD has the tightest, steadiest spread; GBP/USD is naturally volatile; USD/JPY follows Japanese bond yields; commodity currencies track raw materials. Then work through complete numeric examples to master pip value and P&L math (1 standard lot per pip = $10, with price/lot size/leverage all derived step by step), paired with an activity table for the Asian/London/New York sessions, forex-specific technical rules (5 PM ET daily close, round-number psychological levels), and a fundamental event-driven framework — ending in a beginner workflow of "pick one pair → check the session → set direction → small size → stop-loss discipline".

02 · Carry Trade and Interest Rate Differentials

The interest rate differential is the primary driver of exchange rates. This chapter dissects the carry trade: borrow yen at 0.5% to buy AUD at 4%, and 1 million yen earns a net 35,000 in carry per year — but a 5% drop in AUD/JPY wipes out the entire profit. Using the August 2024 global equity crash triggered by the yen carry unwind, it reviews the "carry trade death spiral", then covers the global rate-differential map and interest rate parity logic, ending with compliant variants ordinary people can access (dollar money market funds, offshore dollar deposits) and the compliance boundaries of "reverse repo arbitrage".

03 · Forex Automation and EAs

MT4/MT5 are the world's most widely used forex terminals, and EAs are automated trading programs running inside them. This chapter explains what an EA can actually do (rule-based execution, stop-loss/take-profit management, 24-hour monitoring), then reveals the truth: every "EA that makes 30% a month" sold online is backtest cosmetics (future functions, curve fitting) — a real EA differs little from manual trading. Copy-trading communities, signal groups, and the market maker's bucket-shop model get the same treatment. It closes with a red-line checklist for choosing a platform and a conservative stance "if you must play".

04 · Forex Leverage and Risk Management

Leverage is the soul of forex — and its meat grinder. This chapter derives the math of "leverage × volatility = equity volatility" with tables: at 1:100 leverage, a 1% price move is a 100% swing in your capital; brokers offer 500:1 precisely because they know retail traders blow up fast. Margin calls and stop-out levels are computed with numeric examples, the risk management checklist lands point by point (risk ≤2% per trade, stops always set, avoid data releases), and it exposes the truth about "locking" positions and the withdrawal discipline that "money you can withdraw is the only real profit". Finally it clarifies the regulatory reality: leveraged forex was suspended domestically in 2008, and "offshore platforms" remain a gray zone.

05 · Forex Technical Analysis and Patterns

Forex is the world's deepest, most "pure" market for technical analysis. This chapter first covers three forex-specific traits (daily candle close times in a 24-hour market, the cost of spreads and swap, self-fulfilling consensus and false breakouts), then breaks down each topic: round numbers (00/50 levels) and judging support/resistance as "zones", drawing trendlines and channels with the 45° discipline, correct Fibonacci retracement drawing and using "confluence zones", the candlestick principle of "location first, pattern second", and the practical roles of MAs/Bollinger Bands/ATR in forex. It ends with a Daily→4H→1H→15M multi-timeframe workflow and three execution disciplines.

06 · Central Bank Policy and Event Trading

Forex's medium-term direction is decided by rate expectations, and rate expectations are managed by central banks. This chapter builds a complete event-trading framework: the decision-day "triple hit" (statement/press conference/expectation convergence), a translation table for statement wording and the anchoring effect of forward guidance, reading the dot plot's median and distribution, and the "surprise" logic of trading NFP/CPI/PMI — you earn from the gap versus expectations, not from the data itself. Using the yen as a case study, it reviews the historical script of central bank intervention (round-number triggers, impulses not trends, jawboning first), closing with the "three don'ts" discipline and a weekly executable economic calendar workflow.

Positioning and Prerequisites

  • This chapter is the hands-on extension of chapter 09 (forex concepts): the concepts chapter shows "what the market looks like"; this one teaches "how to trade, how to do the math, how to avoid traps". When you hit an unfamiliar term (pip value, swap, margin level), go back and review 09-Markets & Instruments / 01-The Forex Market↗.
  • Prerequisites: read 09-Markets & Instruments / 01-The Forex Market↗ (forex concepts) and the forex sessions part of 01-Foundations / 04-Trading Hours↗ (know which part of the 24-hour day moves and which sleeps) before starting this chapter.
  • Companion reading: pair platform selection and shady-broker identification with 17-Tools & Platforms↗ and 08-Pitfalls / 02-Spotting Scams↗; pair the risk control framework with 07-Trading Systems↗.
  • Suggested order: 01 (practice basics) → 04 (learn not to die first) → 02 (understand how the market prices things) → 03 (see through automation and copy trading). Read 04 early — risk control should come before method. Technicals (05) and events (06) are the advanced pair: build the math and risk-control base of 01–04 first, then tackle chart patterns; for event trading (06), experience 3–5 full event days on a demo account before going live.

Content Conventions

  • All exchange rates, interest rates, leverage figures, and regulatory values are historical teaching references — defer to the latest market data and regulations.
  • Numeric examples (pip value, margin, P&L, rate differentials) demonstrate calculation methods only and are not trading advice.
  • Any forex promotion claiming "guaranteed profits", "EA making 30% a month", or "signal providers never lose" should be treated as a scam.

The concepts chapter covered it: forex is the world's largest market, how quotes work, how pip value is computed, how dangerous leverage is. This chapter gets practical: every major pair has its own 'personality' — some steady, some explosive, some tracking commodities…

  2. 0202 · Carry Trade and Interest Rate Differentials: The Primary Driver of Exchange Rates

The forex market's most classic, most profitable, and most dangerous strategy has only one name: the carry trade — borrow low-yield currencies, buy high-yield currencies, and earn the rate differential while you sleep. But it was also the detonator of the August 2024 global equity crash. This chapter…

  3. 0303 · Forex Automation (EAs) and Copy Trading: Holy Grail or Meat Grinder

Forex has two of the most seductive narratives: 'EA auto-profits' and 'copy the pros'. What they share is charging you money on the premise that 'you don't need to trade yourself'. This chapter explains the technical truth about MT4/MT5 and EAs, how backtest scams work, the traps of copy-trading…

  4. 0404 · Forex Leverage and Risk Management: Learn Not to Die Before Chasing Profit

The core of forex margin trading is a lever: it lets $1,000 control $100,000 of notional value — and lets a novice walk into a casino carrying a crowbar. This chapter first drills the leverage math to the bone, then works through blow-up mechanics with numbers, risk management…

  5. 0505 · Forex Technical Analysis and Practical Patterns

Forex is the world's deepest and most 'pure' market for technical analysis: no price limits, no T+1, no insider earnings reports — prices form through global auction. Technical analysis is far more usable here than in A-shares — but precisely because everyone uses it, the same…

  6. 0606 · Central Bank Policy and Event Trading

Forex is at heart the relative strength of two currencies, and interest rates are the primary driver of exchange rates — so 'what central banks do' decides the medium-term direction more than any technical indicator. Every Fed rate decision, every BOJ verbal intervention, every digit of the NFP report…
